This is a story about a mother orca named Katina being separated from her daughter Kalina. In 1985 Kalina was the first orca to be born in captivity. When she was born SeaWorld started promoting the baby everywhere. Kalina duty was just like the rest she had to perform in front of live audiences during shamu shows. Since Kalina was too young to understand what she had to do she was a bit disruptive and would sometimes ruin the shows. The trainers described Katina and Kalina’s relationship inseparable. The higher ups in SeaWorld cooperation thought it was a good idea to separate the two and send Kalina to another location of SeaWorld. So the trainers at SeaWorld and employees task was to help transfer Kalina. It was very heartbreaking for Katina because she has a mother had to experience her baby being taken away, knowing she’ll never see her again. A former trainer by the name of Carol Ray described Katina after the separation that “she stayed in the corner of pool, literally just shaking, screaming, screeching and crying.” “The other females in the pool maybe once or twice would come out at night to check on her…” There just goes to show two things did not care about taking the baby or consider their feelings and orcas are compassionate caring animals.
